The Local Area

Sitting at the edge of the River Thames the Isle of Sheppey offers a never-ending list of things to do and places to go and see.

Eastchurch and the Isle of Sheppey sit just off the north coast of Kent; the famous Garden of England which is packed full of beautiful natural areas, fantastic history and lovely coastal resorts.

On the island itself you can find attractions like the RSPB reserve at Elmley Marshes, the Swale National Nature Reserve and many miles of both pebbled and sandy beaches to stroll along which have previously won Tidy Britain Awards and fly the Blue Flag, you’ll also find the usual amusement arcades, restaurants, pubs and golfing dotted along the coast as well as a leisure centre, swimming pool and train station at Sheerness.

Like any island the sea has been an important influence throughout its history; nearby Sheerness included a naval base where Pepys served, further along at Queenborough the marina provides landing for yachts at any tide and Nelson learned much of his sea skills whilst living there with Lady Hamilton. Minster Leas offers some great surfing opportunities as well as some great local history at the church and the 12th century abbey gatehouse; now a museum housing many of the fossils found in the local clay.

Eastchurch itself was a keystone of early aviation history, with the Aero ballooning club establishing in 1901, the Short Brothers bringing aeroplanes around 1909 for testing aircraft from their factories, even Orville and Wilbur Wright visited.

Move further afield onto the Kent mainland and you find even more attractions like historic Canterbury with it’s beautiful cathedral, Chatham and it’s historic dockyards, Maidstone’s Leeds Castle, Aylesford Priory, wonderful sandy and shingle beaches at Margate, Herne Bay and Whitstable or head down to Dover or Folkestone to catch a ferry or train over to France!

The Eastchurch Holiday Centre is a wonderful place to live or just spend your summer season no matter what you’re looking for; ideal as a quiet place to relax and unwind there’s also plenty to do for the more active or those with younger children.
