Visit the historic city of Canterbury

Canterbury CastleCanterbury is one of the most iconic, historic and well-known cities in Kent. Every year, it is visited by millions of people from across the UK, Europe and even further afield who want to take in the stunning architecture, choose from a variety of fine dining establishments, shop in the hundreds of different stores and retail spots and of course, visit the fabulous cathedral!

Canterbury certainly has a tale or two to tell!

Made famous by Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', the city has something for people of all ages and tastes. The most notable attraction is without doubt the cathedral, which is the oldest in England. Built by St Augustine, the first Archbishop of Canterbury, the original cathedral now sits beneath the floor of the nave after having to be completely rebuilt in 1070 following a major fire.

Canterbury Cathedral even withstood various bombings by German bombers during the Second World War. The library was completely destroyed but the cathedral itself was not badly damaged, thanks to the efforts of fire watchers who patrolled the roofs and effectively dealt with any bombs that fell.

Many students and visitors also make sure to take a trip to the 'Canterbury Tales' exhibit, where more information can be found about Geoffrey Chaucer and of course, the participants in his famous tales, including the now famous Wife of Bath.

Canterbury has a wide range of shops and retail outlets to choose from; it is very easy to spend a whole day shopping and still not see every shop the city has to offer! There are many high street names throughout the city, as well as independent retailers offering everything you could possibly think of!

The city also offers a wide variety of restaurants and pubs, offering everything from pizzas and pastas to curries, fish and chips, steaks and Chinese and Mexican dishes. Whatever your tastes, you will something to treat your taste buds in Canterbury.

Aside from the obvious sights and sounds, you can also explore and wander along the famous River Stour and enjoy a walking trail or guided walk through the city.
